For two great walking tours in Spain this year we will visit the Picos De Europa in June-July. A national park preserving the natural and cultural heritage of a remarkable region, the Picos are trailed with a series of great walking routes accessible to people with a moderate level of fitness.
We welcome you at Santander Aiport by bespoke mini-bus where your tour starts (our on-the-ground package includes your hiking tour excepting the cost of return flights to Santander). A 2 and a half hour comfortable drive brings deep into the Picos Mountains up dramatic gorges into this predominantly limestone region, to overnight with Nevandi Hotel, a family run cosy guesthouse in the heart of the hills and at the foot of the trail.
Guesthouse accommodation is high quality throughout the tour- based on our experience delivering walking tours over the past 2 years and visiting every establishment ourselves. You are offered half-board (B&B plus evening meal) based on 2 people sharing a twin or double room (if a couple booking) with a yummy, locally sourced packed lunch for the trail each day.
Luggage transfer is arranged for you so that a day-pack is sufficient for your daily walk. The walking tour goes somewhere different each day on a circular route through the region, covering much of the iconic routes in the central Massif of the Picos, and over-nighting in a new village, so you get to see and experience some of the best walking the area has to offer.
Much of the scenery of the central Massif of the Picos is dominated by the awesome Naranjo de Bulnes, a massif Tor-like rock, which is a mecca for climbers, and a great centre-piece of our tour when we stay at the mountain lodge base of the Naranjo on Day 3.
Our guides are qualified and experienced mountain leaders who have lead walking tours in Spain, the Himalayas and throughout Ireland and Great Britain for years. With a Spanish-speaker on the team, meeting local people and getting to know people en-route is a natural part of enjoying this amazing region.
You will get an opportunity to sample the flavorsome local dishes, the famous cantabrian cheese, the warming bean and chorizo stew or a free-range chicken salad, ensalada de gallo de coral.
We have a long-term relationship with locally based guiding company Picos Rock and Snow who support the tour with logistics, advice and introducing us to the best the area has to offer, which includes friendly local drivers, family-run places to stay, and guides.
Our daily hike is approximately 6 hours walking per day- with some days a bit shorter or longer depending on your preferred pace, with an outdoor lunch in a spectacular location guaranteed! Rest days or breaks mid-tour can be facilitated if you wish to skip a day and go with the luggage, and enjoy some down-time! The final day of the week is spent relaxing and socialising with your group in the incredibly scenic sea-side town of San Vicente de la Barquera, affording time to soak up the coastal climate and town attractions before departing by bus to Santander aiport.
For 2017 our Tour 1 dates are 28 June- 5 July. Tour 2 dates are 5-12 July.
